The foundational principle is rooted in Genesis 2:3, which recounts God יהוה's completion of His creative work and His subsequent sanctification of the seventh day, stepping away from His labors. This divinely ordained interval of rest, a powerful testament to celestial wisdom and peace, reverberates with profound meaning. This sacred imperative is reiterated in Exodus 20:8-"Observe the Sabbath and keep it holy." While six days are designated for your industry and endeavors, the seventh day, the Sabbath of the Lord יהוה your God, demands a complete cessation of all exertion—for you, your household, your livestock, and any sojourners in your midst. This is because within six days, יהוה fashioned the heavens, the earth, the seas, and all their teeming inhabitants. He then bestowed His blessing upon this day of repose and declared it sacred, mirroring His own creative rest and presenting it as a precious gift to humankind.

Students and scholars alike momentarily set aside their academic pursuits, converging in eager anticipation of the hallowed Sabbath observance.
